Global competence can be defined as the skills, attitudes, and behaviors necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world. It is not limited to education as it affects our ability to connect with others in our daily lives.

Global education seeks to connect the traits of global competence with education stakeholders so that teaching and learning reflect the ideals and functions of a global society.

Introduction: Global Competence Matrix
The Global Competence Matrix by World Savvy provides an introductory understanding. It defines global competence, states core concepts, and provides lists of the behaviors, skills, values and attitudes that are integral to becoming a global citizen. Use this resource as a way to familiarize yourself with the core principals of global competency
Connection: 10 Global Competencies &
Nebraska Career Readiness Standards
This poster from Participate Learning showcases 10 Global Competences that students develop as they engage in global learning. These overlap with the Nebraska Career Readiness Standards. If developing all 10 competencies seems overwhelming, consider picking 2-3 to focus on at the beginning. As confidence develops, add more competencies.
Application: Global Competence in Action
CCSSO and Asia Society provide this tool to guide students and teachers to the next step. This guide helps turn skills into actions to better understand the world through study through the four domains of global competence: Investigating the World, Recognizing Perspectives, Taking Action, and Communicating Ideas all encourage students to move from being global observers to global citizens.
Content: United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are a great resource to consider when developing content for global education. The 17 goals address global issues and provide many ideas for students to explore as they become global citizens.
Reflection: Checklist for Teaching Global Competence
Developed by the John Stanford International School and shared through Edutopia, this checklist helps teachers assess and reflect on their practices as a global educator. It also provides examples of how to implement the domains of global learning so that teachers can strengthen their practice.
